So You Want a Bullmastiff!!!
Is this the right breed for you and your family? There are several
issues you must consider before becoming a Bullmastiff owner. Your
family and the Bullmastiff are depending on you to make the right
decisions. If you are the right family, and you choose your Bullmastiff
wisely, this will be one of the most rewarding experiences you will
ever have.
- Bullmastiffs do not tolerate being left outside with minimal
human contact.
- They cannot tolerate extreme heat (due to their short noses)
or extreme cold (due to their short coat).
- They must be socialised as puppies and taken to social obedience
classes whilst their weight is still manageable.
- They slobber – big time! If you are very house-proud,
be prepared to wipe down your walls, furniture, (and even your
guests!) regularly.
- They eat a lot – be prepared to spend between R250 to
R500 per month per dog.
- Veterinary treatment will cost you more, as most dosages rely
on body weight.
- They have a relatively short life span – approximately
7 – 9 years.
- They are very territorial and won’t allow strange animals
onto ‘their’ property.
Now for the up side of Bullmastiffs:
- They are wonderful companions – you will have unconditional
love for the whole of their life.
- They are quiet dogs, only barking when they feel you need to
‘come look’.
- Their coat is easy to care for. A weekly brushing is adequate.
- Bullmastiffs want to share in anything you do – making
supper, washing the car, watching TV – they will be there.
- Bullmastiffs will guard you and your family with their life
– can you live up to that?
Bullmastiffs are not for everyone, but if you can handle the enormous
responsibility, then you will be rewarded handsomely.
